Serving over 85,000 businesses in the UK, Paymentsense is a traditional merchant service provider which charges monthly transaction fees. If you do not have a merchant account, Paymentsense will help you open one up.
Worldpay works in the same way as Paymentsense. Their transactions fees and minimum contract seem to be higher, making it more attractive to large business corporations.
iZettle works differently than the previous options. iZettle uses a shared merchant account and has no minimum contract. There are one off payments for iZettle add ons such as the card reader, EPoS integration, receipt printing and online transactions.
If you want to take card payments for your business, you need to set up a merchant account. But now, in 2020, there are different options available to you and your business. If you set up an account with either Paymentsense or Worldpay you will need a unique merchant account. iZettle is slightly different – payments are processed through a shared merchant account.
Paymentsense has the lowest transaction fees on the market and they also promise to price match. Against their competitors, WorldPay and iZettle, Paymentsense is without a doubt the most cost-effective option.
With Paymentsense you also have the flexibility to change or terminate your contract after 12 months. Worldpay requires a 3-year minimum term, which can be a long time for your business. While iZettle offers a rolling month contract which isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Choosing a merchant service provider is never a quick job, but at the end of the day, each business and each sector is different. The challenge is to pick the right one for you.
Things you can ask yourself when shopping around include:
- Which card machine is cheaper in the long run?
- What are the best-reviewed card machine providers?
- Do I need to integrate my card machine to my EPoS system?
- What type or card machine terminal do I need?
- What are the most competitive transaction fees?
